Visiting Scholars
The Centre brings scholars to the University
of British Columbia to share their understanding of a particular
issue or area. Below is a list of Visiting Scholars. Visiting scholars
available to students and faculty by appointment. Each scholar will
present a lecture on her or his research before departure. Each
will be interviewed for the Centre’s archive.
Visiting Scholar: Mary Lou Rasmussen
Faculty of Education, Monash University, Victoria, Australia.
Dr. Rasmussen's interests include poststructuralism, queer theory, sexuality, gender and schooling, and sex education. She is researching the relationship between Sex Education and Secularism in Canada and Australia. She will be in residence between July and November 2008.
Visiting Scholar: José Augusto Pacheco
University of Minho, Braga, Portugal.
Professor Pacheco is a pioneer in establishing Portuguese curriculum studies. His current research interests include curriculum theory, curriculum politics and research curriculum.
Professor Pacheco will be in residence during June and July 2008.
Visiting Scholar: PhD student Fang Wang
Fang Wang has taken degrees in English (Bachelor of Arts) and Educational studies (Master of Arts) from Northeast Normal University, Changchun, China. Now working on the PhD in Curriculum Studies, her interests include teacher preparation and curriculum reform. Fang Wang will be in residence during 2008.
Visiting Scholar: Postdoctoral Fellow Aditya Raj
Dr. Raj (PhD 2007, McGill University) has taken degrees in History (Bachelor of Arts), Sociology (Master of Arts), Journalism (Post-Graduate Diploma), and Sociology of Education (Master of Philosophy) from New Delhi, India. His interests include Critical Social Theory, Cultural Pedagogy, Curriculum Reform, and Post-Colonial/Globalization/Diaspora Studies. Dr. Raj will be in residence during the academic year 2007-2008.

Visiting Scholar: PhD student Tu Liya
East China Normal University, Shanghai, China
Ms. Tu's interests include curriculum theory and its practice, with special attention to intellectual history, curriculum reform, implementation, and materials. Now working on her PhD in Comparative Curriculum Studies, she is fully involved in China's New Curriculum Reform. Ms. Tu will be in residence during the academic year 2007-2008; she welcomes dialogue.
Visiting Scholar: Professor Ren Ping
Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University, Guangzhou, China
Professor Ren has been interested in educational theory and educational sociology, focusing on Chinese curriculum reform and the educational significance of aging populations. Professor Ren is in residence during September to December 2006.
Lecturer: Neill Richard Ustick
Australian Catholic University, Canberra Campus
Dr. Ustick is an educational psychologist and sociologist interested
in higher order thinking, knowledge building communities –
particularly in relation to interacting theory and practice - and
program coherence. His current research focuses on academics’
work identities, interpreted against a background of competing discourses
(e.g. economic rationalism, corporate managerialism, quality, professionalism)
using symbolic interactionism, critical theory and feminist Poststructuralism,
in the digital portfolios constructed by preservice teachers, developing
ways of representing or evidencing learning, particularly learning
associated with graduate attributes.
Dr. Ustick will be in residence during July 2007.
Visiting Scholar: Elizabeth Macedo
State University of Rio de Janeiro
Professor Macedo is a curriculum theorist and teacher educator interested
in curriculum politics and curriculum thought. Her current research
is focused on how science curriculum contributes to create racial
and sexual difference.
Professor Macedo is in residence during January-December 2007.
